there is a dog named carlisle who lives with a family and another dog named lily who lives with an elderly woman. both of them are little and yellow.
carlisle is sometimes forgotten to be fed. lily eats carrots out of her human companion's mouth, like a kiss. both of them sometimes make mistakes, but they do not know what those mistakes are. they know that they have sinned, but not what the sin was. they try to atone but they can't.
carlisle is a stern dog - a protector. he fiercely and diligently watches over the children he lives with, because the human parents do not.
lily is compassionate and frequently very tired. she likes when the trains run on time. she likes smooth paved roads. she runs in circles when the old woman is low on potassium, and pretends it is she who craves the banana.
carlisle came from a farm. lily came from a farm, too. not the same farm, and not the same year, either.
lily's human mother, ruth, has cancer. ruth has never told a soul. she carries radioactivity with her everywhere she goes. it makes her grandchildren glow. perhaps it will even give them cancer one day, too.
these two dogs - carlisle and lily - are one and the same dog, in two places at once, living two different lives, but having equal power and constant dual awareness.
however, in times of special weather, the two dogs - when referred to as one, "molochiya" - split from one another due to barometric interference - imagine a bird sitting and preening its feathers on the wire between two tin cans. molochiya is rendered incommunicado.
tonight was one such night not in one city, but in two; the two that molochiya lives in.
although these dogs are very keen and very actualized, they are still only dogs, and they are still prone to a desperate dog fear.
carlisle drew circles in the yard hundreds of times, but no one understood him. he did not understand. he cried and whined all day. "why don't they understand, it feels like the world is ending right now."
lily could hear the fingernails of wizards clawing at all of the windows for hours and hours, the blood dripping from the fingers, the breaking of bones - snapped in half, quick and easy - repeating repeating repeating. paralyzed, she curled up next to ruth's bed.
"if i don't make a sound, if i don't move a muscle, they will not find me and my family and kill and eat us"
